BELLEFONTE, PAActuated Medical, Inc., a medical device company developing transformative tools for precision brain access and deep brain therapy delivery, today announced the appointment of Oguz Cataltepe, M.D., F.A.C.S., to its Medical Advisory Board.

Oguz Cataltepe, M.D., F.A.C.S., is Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics at University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center. He also serves as Chief of the Section of Pediatric Neurosurgery and Surgical Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at UMass Memorial Medical Center. His clinical and research expertise spans pediatric neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, hydrocephalus, stereotactic techniques, and surgical approaches for central nervous system gene therapy delivery.

Dr. Cataltepe has been deeply involved in advancing central nervous system (CNS) gene therapy delivery, including active research projects involving cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) delivery in Gangliosidosis Type II, treatment of Mucolipidosis Type IV associated with MCOLN1 mutations using scAAV9-MCOLN1, and intraparenchymal thalamic and intrathecal administration of AAV vectors for infantile-onset Tay-Sachs and Sandhoff disease. His publication record includes work on first-in-human AAV gene therapy for Tay-Sachs disease, robot-assisted intrathalamic infusion for gene therapy in young children, and intrathalamic gene delivery.

Actuated Medical is developing NeuralGlider®, a precision brain access platform designed to improve the insertion of probes, electrodes, cannulas, and therapeutic delivery devices into delicate brain tissue. NeuralGlider has been validated by more than 41 brain research lab users, cited in more than 44 third-party publications, tested with more than 15 compatible implant designs, generated approximately $500k in early sales, and been supported by $18M in non-dilutive capital. The company is advancing NeuralGlider toward clinical applications including deep brain stimulation, stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), gene therapy delivery, neuromodulation, brain-computer interfaces (BCI), and other emerging neurotechnology applications.

“Dr. Cataltepe brings extraordinary clinical expertise at the intersection of pediatric neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, and deep brain therapy delivery,” said Maureen L. Mulvihill, Ph.D., President, and CEO of Actuated Medical. “His experience in gene therapy delivery and intrathalamic surgical approaches is directly aligned with our mission to make precision brain access safer, more reliable, and more scalable. As we advance NeuralGlider toward first-in-human use and FDA submission, his guidance will be instrumental in helping us address real-world neurosurgical challenges and accelerate adoption of the platform.”

Dr. Cataltepe has also contributed to surgical technology innovation, including patents and patent applications related to stereotactic apparatus, flexible surgical sheaths, insertion cannulas, ventricular shunt catheter assemblies, and catheter assemblies. His background in both clinical neurosurgery and device-related innovation makes him a valuable advisor as Actuated Medical advances NeuralGlider for precise delivery of next-generation brain therapies.

“Precise and reliable access to deep brain targets is essential for the next generation of neurosurgical therapies, including gene therapy delivery, neuromodulation, and advanced brain implants,” said Oguz Cataltepe, M.D., F.A.C.S.. “NeuralGlider addresses an important clinical need by focusing on insertion precision and tissue interaction at the point where therapy delivery and patient outcomes begin. I am pleased to join Actuated Medical’s Medical Advisory Board and support the clinical translation of a platform that has the potential to improve how neurosurgeons access and treat the brain.”

Dr. Cataltepe has received numerous honors, including the 2026 “Paragon of Academic Neurosurgery” Award from UMassChan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health, and was a 2023 UMass Medical School Chancellor’s Medal Award finalist for Clinical Excellence. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

“Dr. Cataltepe’s decision to join our Medical Advisory Board is an important milestone for Actuated Medical and NeuralGlider,” added Maureen L. Mulvihill, Ph.D., President & CEO, “His perspective will help ensure that NeuralGlider is developed with the clinical workflow, safety considerations, and therapeutic delivery requirements needed to support neurosurgeons, strategic partners, and ultimately patients.”
