ACTUATED MEDICAL AND DISCOVERY SPACE TEAM UP FOR SUMMER CAMP
BELLEFONTE, PA – Over the last 4 years, Actuated Medical Inc. (AMI) has sponsored a summer camp at Discovery Space Children’s Science Museum in State College, PA. Several AMI engineers and interns volunteer their time to develop the camp program and also work along with the kids during the week. Each camp gives over 15 kids a firsthand look at the science and engineering of the human body, as well as how medical devices work to improve patient outcomes.
“Discovery Space is trying to give kids a realistic view of engineering occupations, especially biomedical engineering. So often they see the glorified parts of the job and don’t truly understand the breadth of skills needed to be successful. We are truly thankful for all the time, energy and materials that AMI provides to help us do that,” said Michele Crowl, Director of Education at Discovery Space of Central Pennsylvania.
This year, AMI engineers worked with campers at Discovery Space’s “BE: the Future camp” held June 27 through July 1. This camp gave kids aged six to twelve the opportunity to learn about how 3D printing can be used to help humans. They designed, dissected and tested their ideas during this week of hands-on look into Biomedical Engineering. “The kids look forward to this week each summer. They get to experiment with technology that is not currently available in their classrooms and are able to learn about the scientific process of hypothesizing, building and testing their ideas,” says Crowl.
“We are very proud to support Discovery Space and its mission to educate our local kids on science and engineering. It is awesome to hear about kids getting excited about science – seeing it as fun. And our AMI team members are so eager to work with the kids advancing the kids’ love of science.” said Maureen L. Mulvihill, AMI President and CEO.
